The Frostery is located in a the village of Uppermill in Saddleworth, which is an area made up of rolling moorland and gritstone villages. It is an important tourist area from which the local economy is boosted by the large numbers of visitors each year. But where is it exactly? A simple question you might think. Not so! The map below shows the area of Saddleworth to the East of Greater Manchester on the border of Lancashire and Yorkshire, but to which county does it belong?
The 1974 local government reorganisation created new administrative borders, but in many cases they did not follow the traditional county boundary lines. The government of the day made it clear that the changes were only for administrative purposes and that the ancient or geographic counties had not been abolished. This has been reiterated many times since, however much confusion remains. In the case of Saddleworth, the administration moved from Wakefield in Yorkshire to the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham in Lancashire but the geographic boundaries of the West Riding of Yorkshire did not change and therefore geographically Saddleworth remains a part of Yorkshire.
So where is Saddleworth? It's in the County of Yorkshire, administered by Oldham MBC in the County of Lancashire. Reasons to visit Saddleworth include: Uppermill : the ‘retail centre’ and home to many wedding suppliers including The Frostery wedding cakes, Tim Simpson Photograpy, Eden Floral Stylists, Adele Howarth-Winstanley Bride (bridalwear), Blush Boutique (bridalwear), Charlotte Mills Bridal (bridal shoes), Mi Abode (interiors and styling), Argento (jewellery). Dovestone : an area of outstanding beauty which attracts visitors who walk, climb, sail, walk the dog or just sit and watch the world go by. Castleshaw : an area of historical interest with its Roman remains and other items of archaeological interest. Delph : a village with a thriving art community and home to the Millgate Arts Centre. The latter is home to the Saddleworth Players and hosts other local concerts. It was also used in the films Yanks and Brassed Off. Dobcross : a typical Pennine village also used in the film Yanks. Diggle : home to the entrance of the Standedge Tunnel on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, which is the highest, longest, deepest canal tunnel in the UK.
