Nestled in the valleys of the Saddleworth hills, tucked away amongst quaint cottages, cobbled squares, independent shops and boutiques in the historic village of Uppermill is The Frostery. Surrounded by stunning countryside, our cake studio is set in a truly special place. Discreetly located, just out of sight from the main high street, is where in 2011 I tentatively opened on my own for the first time.
My parents had built up a successful bakery in Manchester called Trifles selling homemade bread, pies and cakes and I was often roped in during school holidays to help out. I was naturally artistic and over the years I learnt my craft and developed my own style. We had a good local reputation and our cakes were highly regarded.
But The Frostery was of a different time and place, a time of social media and search engines and a place where I was unknown. To succeed I had to get people walking up that street and into our studio and I had to to get people talking about us.
As it turned out I wasn't unknown. Mum helped me out a lot early on and some of our old customers recognised us and immediately started ordering our cakes and from there the business grew.
Our mastery of traditional techniques combined with original, contemporary design ideas means that The Frostery is now firmly established as one of the country’s most exciting and creative cake designers, making hundreds of cakes every year for weddings and celebrations all over the country. We are multiple award winners and regularly contribute to the Channel 4 series Extreme Cake Makers. The Frostery employs two cake decorators and in April 2017 my husband, James joined the business full-time as our Operations Manager.
The main ingredient of a bespoke service is time. Time to communicate ideas, time to develop designs and most importantly the hours put in by the craftsman doing the apprenticeship years and learning their craft. It's been hard work getting to where we are but we've learned so much along the way. Talent helps. But talent is only really the ability to work at something until you are it's master.
"We would wholeheartedly recommend The Frostery. We were so thrilled with our wedding cake!"
