6/5/2017 0 Comments Extreme Cake MakersNot every bride and groom would be happy to have a Channel 4 film crew gatecrash their wedding but we were delighted when Aachal and Nickhil agreed to let the cameras follow the story of their wedding cake and we're especially grateful that they welcomed us into the magnificent Monastery in Manchester which provided the stunning setting for their wedding day last November. Making any wedding cake is a huge responsibility and to be filmed making it for national TV added to the pressure. It took a while to get used to the cameras and crew invading our workspace but the team from the production company, Boomerang, immediately put us at ease and were extremely patient with us! The exciting thing about this cake was the abundance and colours of the sugar flowers which helped give it a real impact and despite the cake's modest size, ensured it would have the impact that Aaachal and Nickhil wanted - even the church's vast nave. The Frostery has had the privilege of designing and making several cakes for weddings and events at The Monastery over the past few years and it really is a special place. Designed by Edward Pugin, Manchester's Monastery is considered to be his architectural masterpiece and is recognised internationally for its architectural and spiritual significance . As a wedding venue The Monastery is breathtakingly romantic, peaceful and truly inspiring. http://www.themonastery.co.uk/ A special thank you to Aachal and Nikhil for letting us into your beautiful wedding.
With its fabulous period features and intriguing romanticism, Dorfold Hall was the perfect backdrop to our Autumn gold creative photoshoot led by Red Floral Architecture. Rather than the russets, bronzes, and fiery, flaming shades that nature glories in at this time of year, we decided to present our ideas using a palette of Autumnal colours inspired by golden October light, gentle white frost, verdant green moss, copper leaves and the ghosts of lavendar. Dorfold Hall's magical quality highlighted our model's vampy appearance designed by Flossy and Leigh with exquisite jewellery by Eleventh Heaven and the haunting beauty of this seasonal showcase was captured beautifully by photographer Phil Drinkwater. The hand-piping on the cake was inspired by the ornate plaster ceilings at Dorfold Hall and the plaque in the rococo gold frame took the current fashion for marbled cakes a step further and using edible paper I tried to create a look of part polished, part rough, pink granite. The magnificent arrangements and room dressings by Red Floral Architecture were full of texture and interesting foliage with white and gold pumpkins, green moss, large succulents, game bird plumes and of course beautiful white flowers with touches of rose gold. The gold stags head featured on the cake and on the dressed stairs surrounded by dozens of twinkling candles. Thanks to Debbie and Andrea for bringing an incredible team of professionals together and for co-ordinating the whole thing and to everyone at Dorfold Hall for being such wonderful hosts for the day. And finally...see how it was all put together in this behind the scenes film by Marry Me Films. Venue Dorfold Hall

Whilst we're looking forward and busy making plans for the next five years, we thought we'd take a quick look back too. Highlights of our first five years are undoubtedly winning two prestigious awards – The hitched.co.uk Breakthrough Award for Best New Wedding Cake Designer in 2013 and The Wedding Industry Award for North West Wedding Cake Designer of the Year 2016, an award for which we’ve been nominated for again in 2017. Whilst that first award was received just two years after opening, Suzanne had being making cakes professionally long before she opened The Frostery. Malcom Gladwell famously observed that it takes roughly 10,000 hours of practice to achieve mastery in a field and it’s pretty safe to say that Suzanne has served her time. Suzanne’s parents owned their own successful bakery selling homemade bread, pies and cakes and she was often roped in during school holidays to help out. After originally setting out on a different career path - she studied physiology at University - her light bulb moment came twenty years ago when she realised that sculpting cakes was what made her happy. Her natural artistic talent meant that she could hand-paint children's characters on cakes and experiment with different techniques to create different textures and unusual finishes.
8/2/2016 0 Comments North West Wedding CakesHaving established (sort of) yesterday, in which county The Frostery is located (both Yorkshire and Lancashire!), we definitely feel rooted in the North West. Most of our weddings take place at a Cheshire or Lancashire venue. We love the occasional trip through Yorkshire but most of the time we'll be heading down the M56 to Cheshire and beyond, travelling around Manchester or heading north, through Lancashire on the M66. Whilst our rural location means that it takes a little longer to deliver and set up cakes than if we were more centrally located, the scenery more than makes up for the extra miles. However there are particular challenges that come with being right on the outskirts of Lancashire. The perception can be that it's a long way to come, particularly when you're in the middle of planning a wedding but we're easily accessible by road and rail and a day in Saddleworth could be just the break you need. After your cake tasting and design consultation at The Frostery you could embark on a stunning waterside walk through a dramatic landscape at Dovestone reservoir, the northern gateway to the Peak District National Park. Or you could combine choosing your wedding cake with a visit to one of the other fantastic wedding suppliers that are located in Uppermill (see below).
We normally have consultations at our shop on Saturdays, when you can the opportunity to sample our cake and discuss your design ideas and wedding themes with Suzanne over a cup of tea or coffee or a glass of English sparkling wine. You can request an appointment here. Alternatively, on 28th February 2016 we will be heading up to the magnificent Eaves Hall, in the heart of the Ribble Valley, Lancashire, with a collection of our wedding cakes, where we are one of a selection of carefully picked wedding suppliers to be exhibiting at the Dream Wedding Fair. So as the wedding season starts to gather momentum, we're already looking forward to the wedding cakes we have booked in at some of our favourite venues; Heaton House Farm, Cheshire, Colshaw Hall, Cheshire, Peckforton Castle, Cheshire, Eaves Hall, Lancashire, and The Midland Hotel, Manchester, amongst many others. The Frostery is located in a the village of Uppermill in Saddleworth, which is an area made up of rolling moorland and gritstone villages. It is an important tourist area from which the local economy is boosted by the large numbers of visitors each year. But where is it exactly? A simple question you might think. Not so! The map below shows the area of Saddleworth to the East of Greater Manchester on the border of Lancashire and Yorkshire, but to which county does it belong?
The 1974 local government reorganisation created new administrative borders, but in many cases they did not follow the traditional county boundary lines. The government of the day made it clear that the changes were only for administrative purposes and that the ancient or geographic counties had not been abolished. This has been reiterated many times since, however much confusion remains. In the case of Saddleworth, the administration moved from Wakefield in Yorkshire to the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham in Lancashire but the geographic boundaries of the West Riding of Yorkshire did not change and therefore geographically Saddleworth remains a part of Yorkshire.
So where is Saddleworth? It's in the County of Yorkshire, administered by Oldham MBC in the County of Lancashire. Reasons to visit Saddleworth include: Uppermill : the ‘retail centre’ and home to many wedding suppliers including The Frostery wedding cakes, Tim Simpson Photograpy, Eden Floral Stylists, Adele Howarth-Winstanley Bride (bridalwear), Blush Boutique (bridalwear), Charlotte Mills Bridal (bridal shoes), Mi Abode (interiors and styling), Argento (jewellery). Dovestone : an area of outstanding beauty which attracts visitors who walk, climb, sail, walk the dog or just sit and watch the world go by. Castleshaw : an area of historical interest with its Roman remains and other items of archaeological interest. Delph : a village with a thriving art community and home to the Millgate Arts Centre. The latter is home to the Saddleworth Players and hosts other local concerts. It was also used in the films Yanks and Brassed Off. Dobcross : a typical Pennine village also used in the film Yanks. Diggle : home to the entrance of the Standedge Tunnel on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, which is the highest, longest, deepest canal tunnel in the UK. Thanks to the Saddleworth White Rose Society and Saddlewoth Parish Council for providing some of the information included here. 19/10/2015 0 Comments The Wedding Industry Awards 2016

6/7/2015 0 Comments Faberge Inspired Sugar EggEarlier this year Suzanne was asked to create a sugar egg for a feature in Cake Masters magazine. Fourteen UK cake artists each contributed a 30cm high egg inspired by the eggs made by the House of Faberge. Suzanne's design was based on the 1902 clover leaf egg made of green gold, platinum, rose-cut diamonds and rubies. The "surprise" inside Suzanne's interpretation of the egg is a cute little fairy holding a fairy cake. Karl Faberge was appointed supplier to the Russian Crown and the clover leaf egg was one of the Imperial Easter eggs made as a gift from the Tsar to the Tsarina. As a humorous nod to the history of the Faberge eggs and the current popularity of baking and cake decorating, Suzanne's egg was adorned with a hand-painted portrait of the UK's Queen of Cakes, Mary Berry. The egg was exhibited at Cake International, London between March 27th and 29th, 2015 and is currently on display at The Frostery in Uppermill. In the news...
